Bow thruster installation, done once and done right.

Tunnel thrusters for power and sail, sized to your hull, glassed in clean and wired on their own battery. We bring the crew to your marina.

Quick answer

A professional bow thruster installation means sizing the thruster to your boat, cutting and glassing a tunnel low in the bow, mounting the motor, and wiring it on a dedicated battery with proper fusing and controls. On most boats it takes 2–3 days once hauled, and costs roughly $5,000–$15,000 all in depending on size.

What you are actually paying for

The thruster is the easy part. The parts that decide whether you love it in five years are the ones nobody photographs: where the tunnel goes, how well it is glassed in, how big the cable is and how far the battery sits from the motor.

  • Sizing. Thrust is matched to your length, windage and displacement and to the wind you want to handle. Undersized thrusters are the most common complaint we hear about other installs.
  • Tunnel placement. As far forward as the hull allows and deep enough to keep the tunnel underwater when the bow pitches. Too shallow and it sucks air and makes noise instead of thrust.
  • Structural glasswork. The tunnel is laminated into the hull inside and out, with the tunnel ends faired so it does not hurt your cruise speed more than it has to.
  • Power. A dedicated battery close to the thruster, a correctly rated main fuse, a battery switch and cable sized for the run. More on that below.
  • Controls. Helm panel, optional second station or wireless remote, all tied into a clean harness.

Our independent battery setup

Every thruster we install runs on its own power. We put a dedicated AGM battery (we use all-glass-mat batteries for their low internal resistance and no-maintenance life) as close to the thruster as the boat allows, and add an onboard charger fed by one small 5-amp AC circuit. That short cable run means full voltage at the motor and maximum thrust every time you press the button.

Lithium is an option on boats where weight matters or the duty cycle is high. Check the thruster maker's guidance first; we cover the details in lithium vs AGM.

How long it takes

Standard installs take our crew 2 to 3 days once the boat is out of the water. Day one is layout, cutting and tunnel fit. Day two is glasswork and cure. Day three is motor, wiring, controls, fairing and testing. Cored hulls, tight forepeaks and dual stations add time, and we tell you that in the quote, not on day four. The full play-by-play is in what a professional install involves.

Which thruster we recommend

It depends on the boat, and we are not tied to one brand. For most cruisers it is a DC tunnel thruster from Sleipner (Side-Power), Vetus, Lewmar, Max Power or Quick. Proportional control is worth it on heavier boats or if you dock short-handed. Fast planing hulls and sailboats often do better with a retractable. Start with the sizing calculator and our product reviews.

Sail and power size differently

A sailboat pivots near the back of its keel, further forward than a motorboat. That shortens the distance between the pivot point and the thruster, so a sailboat usually needs more thrust than a motorboat of the same length to get the same turning effect. We size for it.

Questions people ask

Can a bow thruster be installed with the boat in the water?

Not a tunnel or retractable unit. Both need the boat hauled so we can cut and glass the hull. Some external stern kits and repairs can be done with the boat on a lift or trailer.

Does a bow thruster tunnel slow the boat down?

A little, mostly from turbulence at the tunnel openings. Good fairing or a tapered entry keeps the penalty small. On fast planing boats where every knot counts, a retractable thruster avoids it entirely.

What warranty comes with the install?

The thruster carries the manufacturer's warranty, and we stand behind our workmanship on every install. We will spell out both in your quote.
